AMARILLO – Floydada Collegiate High School will be sending a small bus of tennis players to the Region 1-2A Tennis Tournament to compete on Monday and Tuesday (April 11-12) at the Rebel Tennis Center in Amarillo.

The Whirlwinds will have two-entries in boys singles, a girls singles player, and doubles teams in boys, girls and mixed for a total of nine players. There will also be three players serving as alternate.

The district champions have a slight advantage of playing a district runner-up in the first round on Monday. Floydada’s district winners are Nate Garza in boys singles; girls doubles of the Snowden sisters Sierra and Mia; and the mixed doubles of Abran Castillo and Jazmin Pacheco.

The Whirlwinds will also have Brandon Marguez playing in boys singles; Janeisa Garza in girls singles; plus the duo of Michael Rios and Charlie Contreras in boys doubles.

“We have six players that are returners to the Region tourney – those being Nate Garza, Brandon Marguez, Mike Rios, Jazmin Pacheco, Abran Castillo and Janeisi Garza. The Snowden girls (Sierra and Mia) and Charlie Contreras are making their first appearance. We also will have alternates attending in Aiden Trevino and Braun Hobbs in boys doubles, along with Sydni Chesshir in girls singles. It is going to be a great experience for all of them,” explained fourh-year coach Adam Zepeda.

The tennis team has been working out this spring on the old tennis courts on Texas Avenue, while expansion of two more courts have been taking place. Once tennis season is over there will some renovations of the old courts included a new playing surface to match the two new courts. There will also be some bleachers moved over from the old track field on Crockett Street.

The Rebel Tennis Center is Amarillo’s second largest tennis facility with eleven lighted courts. RTC is located on Elmwood Drive just south of I-40 near Georgia Street.

The next UIL spring sport competition is when Floydada hosts the Area Track and Field meet at Charles Tyer Stadium on Thursday, April 14. The top four qualifiers from districts 3-2A and 4-2A will make up the Area meet. Both Floydada and Lockney will have athletes in the Area meet. The top four finishers per event at Area will advance to the Region 1-2A meet in Canyon two weeks later.
