TAHOKA — The Floydada Whirlwinds scored early and often in the first half of their District 2-2A-I opener on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium in cruising to a convincing 39-6 win over Tahoka.

Floydada (2-4, 1-0) intercepted three Tahoka passes (Ty Henderson with two and Davian Ramos with one) on the Bulldogs' initial three offensive series and turned every one of the turnovers into points. The Whirlwinds ended up scoring four touchdowns and kicked a field goal in their first five possessions to build up a solid 32-0 lead by halftime. Izaiah Alvarado had three touchdown runs of five, 53 and one yards in this span, plus quarterback Trace Glasscock threw a 41-yard scoring beauty to Donovan Rocha.

"The Whirlwinds played hard, were more consistent in their execution, and the offense capitalized off of the turnovers that the defense created," said Floydada coach J.R. Compton.

When asked about the Whirlwinds turning things around by 94 points from the previous outing two weeks ago before the open date, Compton said, "The kids showed a lot of resilience. It would have been easy to have laid down after the Roosevelt game, but they chose to bounce back. And did they ever. We had a short memory of the embarrassing loss, and now we need to move on from the win and concentrate on the next obstacle — Sundown."

Alvarado would score Floydada's lone touchdown on a 40-yard gallop in the third quarter to increase the margin to 39-0. Alvarado ended the night with 179 yards on 15 carries (11.9 ypc average) and five touchdowns, both season highs. Freshman kicker Leo Mendoza was another bright spot by going 4-for-4 on extra points kicks, plus split the uprights on a nice 30-yard field goal. It was Floydada's initial points of the season by a kicker.

The Whirlwinds led in every team statistical category of total yards, rushing and passing production, first downs, fewer turnovers and penalties, and on down the list.

Tahoka running back Hunter Garrison was the game's top rusher with 184 yards and scored the Bulldogs lone touchdown on a 60-yard run. Garrison gave a gutsy performance as he played with a big cast on his left arm.

Floydada will be at home this Friday when they host the Sundown Roughnecks (4-2, 1-0) at Charles Tyer Stadium. Sundown is on a three-game winning streak, including some last-second heroics over previously undefeated Farwell 9-7 (in 6 OTs), and a shutout of Post 7-0 by scoring the winning touchdown with three seconds left in the game this past Friday.
