LOCKNEY — The Lockney Longhorns were back in the stampede mode again by coming out the gates with a strong first half lead of 28-7 en route to a 40-7 win over the Crosbyton Chiefs (3-4, 0-1) in their District 5-2A-II debut at Mitchell-Zimmerman Field on Friday. Lockney (6-1, 1-0) extends its winning streak to six in a row.

The Longhorns got off to a good start by scoring on the first possession with a good looking drive.

"We did not wait until the second half to turn up the intensity," said Lockney coach Cory McCombs. You could tell from McCombs' voice tone he was glad to see the surge come early for a change.

"I thought the O-Line had another good game. They do a very good job on technique. This is really an inexperienced group with three of the five not playing football last year," McCombs added.

Lockney's offensive line consists of senior Quinton Johnson at center; sophomore Andrew Hernandez and senior Eli Alvarez at the guards; plus sophomore Jisaih Lara and senior Jaime Garcia at the tackles.

McCombs has been pleased all season by their play. Friday, the offensive line paved the way for the Longhorns' running game to produce 232 yards and five touchdowns while also providing protection for quarterback Pablo Morales to pass for 142 yards and a score. Morales was impressive, completing seven of his eight pass attempts, plus he scored four touchdowns on runs of 10, 3, 2  and 1 yards.

The Longhorns' running game was pretty much by committee with seven different players carrying the ball, led by senior Nathan Cineceros with 11 carries for 86 yards and one touchdown (12 TDs for the season). Austin Rodriguez contributed 54 yards on just two carries. Ian Rodriguez and Elias Alvarez rushed for 37 and 36 yards respectively.

Lockney will now get a much deserved open date this coming Friday after playing seven consecutive games and two scrimmages on consecutive weeks without a break.
