Floyd County Historical Museum: 1979 Memories.

Robert Wright Smith, Jr. was born in Erath County, Texas, May 16, 1892.  He came to Floyd County in 1896 with his parents, Robert Wright and Florence Huckabay Smith.  Rob and Annie  (Reeves) were married May 2, 1917, at the Lee Reeves home.  Annie, the daughter of Lee and Allie Reeves, was born August 20, 1893, in Montague County, Texas, and moved with her parents and sister, Kate, to Floyd County in 1904. Both Rob and Annie attended college; Rob at Wayland and Annie at Seth Ward in Plainview.

Sod was being broken out for farming at that time, and Annie and Rob began farming immediately.  They lived with one or the other set of parents until they could get a small house built a mile north of the Lee Reeves house (now the Robert Lee Smith home place).  They lived there until 1925 and during that two sons were born.  Robert Lee in 1919 and Bryan in 1924.  In 1925, at the death of Annie’s father, the Smiths moved into the Lee Reeves home to care for her mother.  There in 1927, their youngest son, Howard, was born. The Smiths stayed on there after the death of Annie’s mother in 1929 and made that their home except for six years (1932-1938) in Lockney while the boys were in high school.

Rob farmed and raised registered Jersey cattle, selling the cream.  Annie always had a vegetable garden and flowers and was active in the Lockney Garden Club and La Ventana Study Club. Rob served as an elder in the Main Street Church of Christ for many years, until his death in 1954, and was always involved in service to the community, including serving on the Floyd County School Board for many years.

In 1952, Rob and Annie built a new house one mile west of Sterley, mainly to have the advantage of a paved road all the way to Lockney.  This is now the Bryan Smith home.  Rob and Annie only lived in the new house for two years before Rob’s death in February, 1954.

In 1955, Annie moved to Lockney.  She has remained very active in church and community affairs into her 84th year-at this writing.
