FLOYDADA, TX – The Floydada Whirlwinds basketball team prepare for a new season under new head coach Karson Hembree.

Coach Hembree was an assistant at Plainview for 4 years for both football and basketball before getting the call to become the Floydada Whirlwinds head coach.

“It’s been fast and a lot of learning, but it’s been fun, and the kids have made it a little bit easier, and my assistants, Coach Ramirez and Coach Wickware, have really helped out big time.”

What is your coaching philosophy, and how will that apply to the students at Floydada?

“My biggest philosophy is that we are playing a game, but more importantly, we are preparing them for life. We have four key values that we base things around: accountability, competitiveness, toughness, and love. That’s our core foundation, and I am the type of coach that is going to hold these guys accountable; we are going to do things the right way.”

With last year’s historic run for the Whirlwinds, how do you approach a new season?

“We are going to build off of what we had last year. We’ve been discussing with the team that we aren’t last year’s team; we are this year’s team. We are going to take those expectations that people have for us and make them our own. With four returning from last year’s team, those guys have stepped up and helped lead the team.”

Coach Hembree and the Floydada Whirlwinds will host the Lorenzo Hornets in their opening game of the season on Tuesday.
