FLOYD COUNTY, TX – Even though this is the top pumpkin-producing county in the state, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is searching for more producers.

According to Floyd County Extension Agent Mark Carroll, free seeds are available to anyone who wants to grow their own pumpkins and participate in the first-ever Pumpkin Growing Contest this fall.

The extension office will distribute two free seeds with growing instructions to anyone wanting to try growing Prizewinner (giant) or Gold Dust (miniature) pumpkin varieties. Participants will receive instructions on how to get the most from the seeds and directions on the contest.

“Participants can plant their seeds in the coming weeks and let them get as big as possible,” Carroll explains. “The contest is for families, youth groups, businesses, and organizations. In general, pumpkins like hot, dry weather, so this should be a good year.”

Prizes will be awarded for three categories, including the smallest/largest, perfectly shaped, and odd color, and will be judged at the Floydada Punkin Days on October 14, 2023.

The extension office has ordered a limited number of seeds, so get them before they run out. The seeds can be picked up at the Floyd County Extension office at 122 E. California in Floydada.
