Vera Dean Powell (Liberal)

Vera Dean (Poteet) Powell, age 86, formerly of Floydada, passed away in Liberal, Kansas, on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, October 16, 2022, at the Primitive Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Floydada Cemetery. Arrangements are under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Saturday, October 15, 2022, at the funeral home.

Vera Dean was born on December 15, 1935, the daughter of Calvin William Poteet and Ollie Thelma (Elliott) Poteet in Crosbyton, TX.  Vera Dean was the fourth of five children. She spent her last few years under the loving care of her daughter, Brenda.  Later she and Kenneth would move to Wheatridge Care Park in Liberal, KS, where they were cared for.

Vera Dean married her sweetheart, Kenneth Newton Powell, on June 15, 1952.  The two of them had two children, Brenda Kay, and Kenneth Earl.  Ken and Dean moved to Nara Visa, NM, in 1963, where they raised their children. Ken and Dean lived next to Kenneth’s sister and Vera Dean’s brother.  The couple loved Curtis and Catherine’s children as if they were their own.  To hear the stories Vera would tell of the days in New Mexico would make you laugh until you cried. Vera didn’t need much. She just enjoyed the simple things in life. She just needed her family to be happy and was happy.  Vera loved spending time with her entire family and all of her friends.  She had a heart as big as the ocean. Vera was always up to something in her younger years.  She was just as mischievous as Kenneth… there was always laughter and some kind of shenanigans. Everyone knew if there was a game of SPOONS to be played when she was around, it could get vicious.

Vera had a lifetime of health problems.  She battled diabetes for many, many years.  Her illness brought her closer to God.  The church was very important in Vera’s life.  She looked forward to going to church each Sunday.  She enjoyed taking her grandchildren to church and listening to them sing and play.  Her grandchildren loved her and looked up to her.  They always knew she would be there with arms wide open. She often said, “you kids are having fun, and you don’t even know it.”  Her laughter always seemed to erase all your troubles.

Vera Dean is survived by her daughter, Brenda Mallory, and husband, Dusty of Liberal, KS; her son, Earl Powell, and wife, Melody of Denison, TX; Sister, Lou Rita Ellis; Five Grandchildren: Trixy Toth-Mallory, Aaron Mallory, Steven Powell, Stephanie Keel and Jeremy Powell; Eleven Great-Grandchildren: Preston, Elisia, Natalie, Trystan, Brighton, Pyper, Makayla, Nikki, Madison, Jonathan, and Logan; Vera is also survived by her niece,  Gail (Poteet) Dubois, and nephew, Wayne Poteet and many, many other nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Powell; both of her parents, Calvin and Ollie Poteet; her brother, Curtis; two sisters, LaVerne McCarty and Barbara Wages and one great-great grandson, Maverick.
