NEW DEAL – The Floydada Whirlwinds ran head-on into the New Deal Lions Friday night, dropping their first district road game by a 42-7 score.
Based on numbers, the Whirlwinds played a close game, recovering one of two Lions turnover, controlling time of possession (24:23 to New Deal’s 23:37), and having a better pass completion rate (67 percent to the Lions’ 63). But the Winds were stopped when it came to yardage, with the Lions putting up 537 yards of total offense and 355 rushing yards to Floydada’s 174 yards of total offense. The Whirlwinds were also penalized more and for more yards, with 9 flags thrown for an average of 10 yards per flag.
Floydada’s one scoring drive came on a 20-yard Izaih Alvarado run in the second quarter. Last week’s hero Leo Mendoza put up the extra point and gave the Whirlwinds their 7 points for the night.
Coming up, the Whirlwinds open up a two-game home stand as they welcome the Tahoka Bulldogs to Charles Tyer Stadium. That game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. next Friday night. They will host the Post Antelopes the following week before wrapping up the regular season on the road in Olton.
