FLOYDADA – To know Tony Whitfill is to know his sense of humor. When told he would be receiving the Half Century award from the Floydada Lions Club, Whitfill joked “That’s impossible, I’m only 47!”
Despite the age he might list on his driver’s license, Whitfill has served the Lions Club in two locations across West Texas for more than 50 years, joining the Floydada club in 1972 before moving to Memphis in 1978. He returned to Floydada 16 years later, picking up where he’d left off. “I served as Lion Boss (club president) twice in Floydada and once in Memphis.”
During his award presentation Tuesday Whitfill joked with fellow Lions that he would need the club to go ahead and order his Century Award for 2072. “You need to get that done,” before taking a slightly more serious tone. “It’s been a privilege to be a Lions Club member in Floydada, I’ve met a lot of wonderful people over the years.”
The Floydada Lions meet jointly with Rotary International on Tuesdays at Noon at First United Methodist Church. Membership is open to all adults.
