LOCKNEY – Superintendent Jim Baum confirmed Friday afternoon Longhorns Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Cory McCombs is leaving the district to take a similar position in Anson.

In making the announcement, Baum told the Record “We’re sad to learn of his departure, but we are grateful for his investment into our students,” adding the Longhorns wished McCombs the best as he takes over the Anson Tigers program.

McCombs was Lockney’s football coach for one season, leading the Longhorns to a 7-4 season record that included a 7-game winning streak. The Horns advanced to the playoffs and lost at Bi-District. He was in the process of rebuilding a Longhorns team that will lose 14-seniors at graduation in May, using a unique off-season program built around dividing athletes into platoons of five athletes that appeared to be addressing team unity and a competitive environment for physical improvement.

Baum expressed the appreciation LISD had for McCombs’ leadership and said they are immediately starting a search for his replacement to continue to lead Lockney student athletes in a positive and competitive nature. Anson Superintendent Jay Baccus said McCombs was chosen from a field of 85-applicants. “We were very knowledgeable of his work ethic and character since he was an assistant coach on two different stints at Anson, plus he and wife (Tina) are Jones County people. We are excited about them returning to our school system.”

The 2-A Division 1 Anson Tigers have had 6-5 and 7-4 seasons in football the past two seasons that advanced to the Bi-District playoffs each of those seasons. With the latest UIL realignment, Baccus said Anson will compete against Stamford, Hawley, Cisco, Colorado City and Olney. He described it as a very competitive district in athletics.

McCombs is a native of Hamlin, which is approximately 16-miles from Anson. Baum described the job change as a good move for the McCombs family. The Floyd County Record appreciated the support and cooperation from McCombs in providing coverage to Lockney athletics.
