HALE CENTER – Erin Trevino was one walk shy of throwing her first perfect game, but had to settle for her third career no-hitter and fifth shutout of the season in a 17-0 blanking of the Hale Center Lady Owls on Tuesday. It was not the ideal day to have control in the pitchers circle with aggravating 30-35 mph north winds blowing down your collar.
“It was tough out there today. I definitely struggled with my riser pitch taking off, but the fastball was there. I will take it, regardless ” Trevino said in a post game interview with KFLP. Trevino threw seven strikeouts to raise her season total to 109 K’s.
The Lady Winds offense gave Trevino an abundance of support in slamming 11-hits including a Grand Slam home run by freshman Soriah Wickware, an inside the park homer by junior Kaley Garza
and five doubles between Trevino, Reyna Sanchez, Carissa Fernandez, Analise Perez and Garza. The Lady Winds took 13-walks from Hale Center pitching that helped the high scoring spree.
Wickware has now hit one out of the park for three consecutive games. “Soriah has tremendous strength and is a great athlete. There is no way I thought anyone would hit one out of the park today into that strong north wind, but Soriah did. She is a natural homerun hitter. She still has room to improve, and we are working with her to correct some minor tendacies,” veteran coach Armando Morales told KFLP.
For Garza, it was her second straight outing to race around all the bases for an inside the park home run. “I am definitely not the fasted player on this team, I just happened to hit into the right place in right field to make it happen. It was fun,” said the junior versatile player.
Garza has played right field, first base base and has served as the designated player. “I will play wherever Coach Morales needs me,” she added with a smile.
The Lady Winds have now increased their winning streak to six, and will host Hale Center in Game 2 of the weekly series on Saturday at Lady Winds Field beginning at 11:00 a.m. KFLP 900 AM will have the broadcast.
