Winds fall in district opener vs. New Deal

FLOYDADA – The defending class 2A State Champions and winners of the 3-2A baseball title, the New Deal Lions (5-3, 1-0) looked the roll at Watson Field on Tuesday in knocking off the Floydada Whirlwinds 13-1. It was the district debut for both teams.

New Deal got a fast start with six runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone. Floydada would score its only run in the bottom half of the first frame when Juan Gonzales hit a RBI single to bring in Andres Mendoza. Mendoza led off the inning with a single.

Senior pitcher Harley Patterson took charge for New Deal by not allowing another another hit in the remainder of the three innings he was on the mounds. He had four strikeouts and gave up just one walk. Jonas Rodrigquez threw two innings of relief.

The Lions had 18-hits in the win led by Patterson and Tyler Bigham with three hits each. Bron Fitzgerald and Jacob Guitierrez led New Deal with three RBI apiece. Patterson had three stolen bases to lead in that category. New Deal batters produced four extra base hits including a triple by Colby Henderson, Fitzgerald slapped a pair of doubles, and Jonas Rodriguez had one double.

These two teams will meet again this Saturday at New Deal starting a 11:00 a.m. to conclude the week one series. Randell Sims will have the radio broadcast on 106.1 FLiP FM.
