Floydada firefighters honored at awards banquet

FLOYDADA – It was a night of good-natured ribbing and a time to honor men who have served the Floydada community for a number of years. Monday night the Floydada Volunteer Fire Department held their annual awards banquet at Floydada’s Massie Events Center.

Eating on placemats made for the firefighters by A.B. Duncan Elementary’s Kindergarten class, the banquet featured a number of awards, including those that poked fun at certain department members. But in the in each award recognized the hard work on the part of the volunteers. Over half of the 24 members have more than a decade of service. Two members were honored for their longtime service, Cowboy Wylie was recognized for 47 years with the department, and Larry Guthrie marked 49 years as a firefighter in Floydada.

Two other awards were handed out Monday, the rookie of the year and firefighter of the year. The rookie recognized for his first year of work in 2021 was Bradley Cunningham. The man nominated by his peers as the volunteer firefighter of the year was Larron Little.

Following the awards the firefighters watched a presentation on highlights for the department in 2021, including the delivery of their new ladder truck and their taking part in a ‘fireman’s baseball’ challenge with KCBD’s Pete Christy.
