The Lockney Lady Horns pose with their bi-district trophy after defeating Vega at home on February 14, 2022 (Nick Long/FCR)
LOCKNEY – The Lockney Lady Horns found themselves in a hole of 19-4 after the first quarter of their 2A Bi-District game with Vega Lady Horns, but stormed back to win the second, fourth and overtime quarters to take a 58-50 win to advance to the Area round later this week. Lockney (24-8) is now 13-1 on their home court this season.
Senior Gabriella Cervantes led the Lockney comeback by scoring a game high 21-points including five 3-pointers from the arc and sinking six critical free throws in overtime. Cervantes put her team on her back in the extra period after the Lady Horns season leading scorer Adri Villareal and third highest scorer Moriah Ascensio fouled out in the fourth quarter. Lockney made 10 – 3’s which was very big.
“It was rough in overtime with two of our top players out of the game. I had faith we could win and confidence in my free throw shooting. This is really special to win the Bi-District trophy and do it with my teammates,” an elated and exhausted Cervantes explained.
Lockney coach Trey Bale had similar remarks, “Gabby played her tail off. She played like a senior should. We played a lot players in the non-district games to get ready for this kind of situation. It paid off for us. This was an exciting comeback for our team.”
Bale has been emphasizing protecting their homecourt all season where Lady Horns are now 13-1 at home. Lockney will now advance to the Area round to play the No. 9 state rated Panhandle Ettes (25-8) Thursday night at 6 at Canyon High School’s Joe Lombard Gymnasium. Panhandle derailed West Texas-Stinnett 88-20 on Monday.
