Floydada Lady Winds at New Deal (Ryan Crowe/FCR)
NEW DEAL – Floydada point guard Zay Santos made a drive down the middle of the lane to make a clutch field goal just before the buzzer to give the Lady Winds a 35-33 win over the New Deal Lady Lions in overtime at the Lions Den on Tuesday night. The win keeps Floydada (18-7, 5-1) in first place of the District 4-2A girls race with two games to play in the regular season.
The Lady Winds took the early lead of 13-3 in the first quarter, and maintained a 20-12 advantage at halftime. New Deal would chip away in the second half and tied the contest at 27-27 with a three pointer from the corner by Ghenivieve Vasquez with 11-seconds remaining in regulation.
Floydada never trailed in overtime thanks to Santos making a pair of free throws and eventually the winning shot. Sierra Snowden put in a two point field goal and Erin Trevino made two important free shots in the overtime period.
Lailah Burks was Floydada’s leading scorer with eight points, followed by Santos and Katelyn Ramirez with seven apiece. The Lady Winds made 12-of-18 free throws for the night and out rebounded the Lady Lions 29-25.
Vasquez of New Deal was the game’s leading scorer with 14-points and the top rebounder with eight in a losing effort.
Floydada has now defeated New Deal and Lockney in both meetings, while its only loss in district has been to Hale Center.
