Lady Winds win the Whirlwind Classic Championship

FLOYDADA — The Lady Winds (11-5) made a solid showing at the Whirlwind Classic this past weekend by finishing 4-0 and claiming the girls championship. The Floydada girls took second place at the Tahoka Tournament the prior weekend.

The biggest win of the Whirlwind Classic was Friday night when the Lady Winds edged the No. 3 (TAPPS 4A) Lubbock Trinity Lady Lions (4-9) 45-44. Trinity’s record includes losses to state-rated No. 4 (3A) Brownfield, No. 1 (2A) Gruver, No. 8 (2A) Wellington, and other traditionally strong girls basketball programs of Idalou and Jim Ned.

The Lady Winds opened the Whirlwind Classic by beating the Lorenzo Lady Hornets 60-41 on Thursday, followed by a pair of wins on Friday against the Lubbock Kingdom Prep Warriors 46-31 and Lubbock Trinity Lady Lions 45-44, then beat Kingdom Prep 56-33 in a rematch on Saturday.

Sophomore post Sierra Snowden led Floydada in scoring during the Classic with 56 points including a team season high by an individual of 22 on Thursday; junior Danielle Zavala had 40, senior Celeste Wickware ended up with 30, Erin Trevino finished with 28, Zay Santos had 23, and junior Lailah Burks contributed 18.
