FLOYDADA — The Floydada Whirlwinds (9-0) kept their season record unblemished by taking two games on Thursday in the opening day of the Whirlwind Classic at Whirlwind Gym. Sophomore guard Abram Castillo had a good day of scoring 26 points in both the 59-44 win over the Lubbock Kingdom Prep Warriors at midday. The Whirlwinds then knocked off the 3A Slaton Tigers 71-65 in the evening.
In game one, the Whirlwinds jumped out to a 17-4 first quarter lead and widened the margin to 26-9 by intermission. The Tigers outscored Floydada 35-33 in the second half, but the Whirlwinds’ defense kept the lead in the double-digit margin to take the 59-44 victory.
Aiden Trevino had 16 points as the Whirlwinds’ second-leading scorer, while Kingdom Prep’s Luke Sell was the game’s top scorer with 35 in a losing effort.
In game two, Slaton took a slim 15-14 at the end of the first quarter. Floydada would then outscore the Tigers 43-28 in the middle of game in the second and third quarters. Again, the Whirlwind defense kept its opponent at arm’s length to hold off a final quarter surge by Slaton and Floydada would take the 71-65 win.
Castillo’s 26 points again were supported by Braun Hobbs with 15, Trevino had 14, and Ty Henderson had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
