
CANYON, TX — A talented group of athletes from Floydada is gearing up to represent their school at the UIL 2A Regional Track Meet this week in Canyon, Texas. With a mix of endurance runners, sprinters, relay squads, and field competitors, the Whirlwinds are ready to showcase their hard work and determination on the regional stage.
James Zepeda will be a major presence in the distance events, competing in the 3200 meters, 1600 meters, and 800 meters. Known for his consistent pacing and strong finishes, Zepeda hopes to punch his ticket to the state meet in multiple events.
In the sprints, Sergio Valadez will take on the 100 meters, while also contributing to the 4×200 meter relay team alongside Jonathon Pena, JP Lopez, and Eric Gonzalez.
Leo Mendoza is set to compete in the 400 meters and will also join the 4×400 meter relay team, which features JP Lopez, Braun Hobbs, and Jonathon Pena. These relay teams bring speed and chemistry, and they’ll be looking to clock season-best times against tough regional competition.
Field events will see Katelynn Ramirez representing Floydada in the discus, where she aims to make her mark with powerful throws.
Several athletes have been named alternates for the meet, including Christian Contreras, Ixan Pecina, Chris Yannis, and Santiago Miranda, ready to step in and support the team if called upon.
