FLOYDADA, TX — The Floydada Whirlwinds came up just short in a hard-fought district matchup Tuesday night, falling 5-2 to the Memphis Cyclones in a game that was tight until the final inning.
After three scoreless innings, Memphis struck first with a run in the fourth before tacking on three more in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. The Whirlwinds responded with a rally in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs to close the gap and shift momentum. However, the Cyclones added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and held on to secure the win.
Despite the loss, Floydada outhit Memphis 7-3, showing promise at the plate. However, four defensive errors proved costly and allowed the Cyclones to extend innings and capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Memphis played a cleaner game in the field and made the most of their limited offensive chances, showing patience and discipline to push runs across when it mattered most.
The Whirlwinds look to bounce back in their next outing as district play continues.
