SAN ANTONIO, TX – This year, three Lockney FFA juniors—Rylee Austin, Nickolas Cervantes, and Adrian Jimenez—are heading to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo’s annual Calf Scramble! This incredible opportunity allows students to earn funding for their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects for the upcoming year.
During the event, 24 contestants will enter the arena, but only 12 calves will be available to catch. To secure a voucher, students must successfully catch a calf, halter it, and lead it back to the center of the ring. Those who accomplish this impressive feat will receive a voucher ranging from $1,400 to $2,500 to invest in their livestock projects.
If successful, students will use their vouchers to purchase an animal from a breeder or sale of their choice, with the requirement that they exhibit it at next year’s San Antonio Stock Show. In addition to caring for and preparing their animal for competition, they will attend donor dinners and meetings leading up to the show.
Under the guidance of Mr. Beltran, these students will also submit monthly reports to the San Antonio Stock Show Calf Scramble Committee and their donor, detailing their project’s progress, the skills they are gaining, and the impact of this experience on their high school journey.
Opportunities like these are rare, and Rylee, Nickolas, and Adrian are ready to make the most of it. Best of luck to them as they take on this exciting challenge!
