FLOYD COUNTY, TX – As the Texas Panhandle burns at this hour, firefighters from both Floydada and Lockney spent time on Monday fighting two different grass fires across the county.
The first call arrived at 10:53 am, approximately 10 miles east of Floydada on U.S. 70, with the Floydada VFD responding. Firefighters from Lockney joined Floydada to battle a blaze on FM 2286, four miles east of South Plains.
At last check, authorities fear more than 40 homes were destroyed in Fritch and another 60 in Canadian due to wildfires. Smoke from those fires reached Floyd County on Tuesday evening.
