FLOYDADA, TX – The #6-ranked Floydada Whirlwinds hosted the Olton Mustangs in a battle for first place in the district standings on Friday.
Floydada was able to jump out to an early 20-7 in the first quarter thanks to their defensive pressure.
The Mustangs fought back in the second quarter, outscoring the Whirlwinds 17-7 and cutting the lead to 27-24 going into halftime.
Floydada’s pressure was back to start the second half, and they extended their lead to 41-28 at the end of the third quarter.
The Whirlwinds would secure the win in the fourth quarter, stopping a late comeback from Olton, to remain perfect in district play.
Floydada moves to 17-6 overall and 5-0 in district with the 61-47 victory on Friday.
Junior Braun Hobbs celebrated 1,500 career points for the Whirlwinds with 17 points and 10 rebounds in Friday’s win.
Also contributing to scoring were junior Ty Henderson, who had a game-high 20 points and 8 rebounds, and senior Hagen Hinsley, who had 11 points and 15 rebounds.
