FLOYDADA, TX – With at least four other communities within a 90-mile radius also searching for a chief of police, the law of supply and demand is at work.
Last month, former Floydada Police Chief Ruben Ramon resigned to take a position within City Hall, creating an opening that City Manager (and former Police Chief) Darrell Gooch says is difficult to fill.
With the prospect of filling the position quickly fading, members of the Floydada City Council voted Tuesday evening to name Paul Raissez as the Chief Administrator of the city’s patrol unit.
Raissez currently serves as sheriff for Floyd County, an office he will continue to hold, but he admits the move makes sense. Officers from both the city and county work side-by-side in many ways already, so his role will be more administrative and will provide some streamlining to the services offered within the Floydada city limits.
The decision by the Council also comes with a number of cost-savings since the Sheriff will receive compensation but not the entire package needed to fill the position.
