LOCKNEY, TX – The Floyd County Record continues to spotlight the athletes that represent our communities, including junior EJ Ascensio.

EJ is a first-year varsity player and plays as a receiver and strong safety for the Longhorns.

As a first-year varsity member, what is the biggest difference from JV for you? What did you do in the offseason that gave you this opportunity?

Friday nights are a lot more physical and a lot faster. I worked harder than I ever have and proved to the coaches that I want to do this.

What do you enjoy about football?

Most of the time, the team and the people around you make it really fun. Going into game days, everyone changes into a “business” mode and gets it done, and afterwards we can have fun again.

What’s the key to staying focused as you finish the regular season?

Come in here and know that we have to get business done and take care of that if we want to win district or make a run in the playoffs. It’s important that we turn that social switch off and take care of it.

Do you have a game-day routine?

I have a game day playlist that I listen to, and I will blast that and stay in my own zone until it’s time to go out there and take care of business.

EJ also participates in UIL and is a part of the Longhorn baseball team.
