FLOYDADA, TX – The Floydada Lady Winds basketball teams will begin their 2023–2024 campaigns today as the UIL allows teams to begin their first day of practice.
The Lady Winds are led by head coach Adam Zepeda.
Zepeda is entering his third season as the Lady Winds head coach, his seventh season in Floydada, and his twelveth season as head coach.
Coach Zepeda enters the 23-24 season six games away from 200 career wins as a head coach. (194-102 career record)
Coach Zepeda began the interview by stating, “We have eight returning varsity players from last year; we lost four seniors, including a starter, but anytime there are a large number of returning players, it’s always a good thing.”
Floydada went 21-13 overall and 9-5 in the district 4-2A, finishing in a three-way tie for second place between Hale Center and Olton.
Returning eight players—how does that impact the beginning of a season?
“A lot of players that I have now were freshmen and sophomores when I switched from the boys head coach over to the girls head coach, so they know the system and they know expectations. We are able to start in “chapter seven” instead of “chapter one”, so it makes it easier to build on the things that we did last season.”
In the first round of the playoffs, the Lady Winds defeated Vega 53-50.
This was the first time in over ten years that the Lady Winds advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
In the area round of the playoffs, the Lady Winds fell to Gruver (State Runner-Up) 60-40.
What is something that you will focus on during this season to flip the close losses last year into wins?
“I have to get better. I have to put the girls in a position to be successful. But with this being year three, we have more experience under our belt. I think that we will be one of the most experienced teams in the district, so those little mistakes that made the difference in some big games last year shouldn’t happen this season. I feel like we are in a great position to be successful and make a deep run, and I beefed up the schedule for that.”
Abby Sanders and Travis Pittman serve as assistant coaches for the Floydada Lady Winds.
October 28th is the first scrimmage for the Lady Winds as they travel to Valley to play the Lady Patriots.
