The latest Texas Drought Monitor map shows dry conditions across the state (National Drought Mitigation Center)
FLOYD COUNTY, TX – Though some areas across the county received well over two inches of rainfall this week, officially at the Texas Tech Mesonet site (north of Floydada), the rain gauge collected one inch of moisture.
Matt Makens with Makens Weather said earlier this year that La Nina was finished and El Nino would return, bringing with it more moisture for the Texas Southern Plains.
So far this year, the Mesonet site has recorded 15.29″ of moisture, more than the 12.91″ in 2022 and 8.26″ in 2020, yet remains the third driest year since 2014.
Makens is also predicting a heavy snow season for the Rockies and Southern High Plains – including the Panhandle and South Plains.
