FLOYDADA, TX – The 2023–2024 football season is right around the corner, and the Floydada Whirlwinds look to improve and have their sights set on the top.
Third year head coach J.R. Compton said, “We are losing six guys from this past year, and they were guys that invested a lot in this team, and so now it’s important for us to get the young guys where they are investing in it too. With the seniors leaving, it seems like big shoes to fill, but their job isn’t to fill those shoes, it’s to outgrow them.”
The Whirlwinds went 6-5 last year and 3-2 in district, earning a spot in the playoffs, where they were taken out in the first round by Panhandle.
When asked about the competition in the district, Compton said this: “This district from top to bottom is stout, it’s a strong district. Our goal is to progress each year, and we have done that so far. It’s a slow process, but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Understanding that it seems tough to get to the top of the mountain, but staying there is the tough part.”
“We are just a little over halfway through our summer strength and conditioning, and it’s halftime now. We want to win the first half, and we want to win the second half. We want to win the game. We are coming into halftime right now, and we have to reload and put our best effort in to win the second half.”
