Seven Sentence Sermon: What’s So Merry?

Though we may refer to this carnival ride as a carousel (America), merry-go-round (international), roundabout (Britain), or hurdy-gurdy (Australia), there’s no doubt we’re talking about the same thing.

At the National Mall in Washington, DC, there’s a carousel, and on the weekends, during good weather, you could always find kids riding it.

Since covid in 2020, it just sits idle and no longer has any horses or other places to sit even if it were operational: it just takes up space.

Ephesians 5:15-17 (ESV) reminds us to “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

Is that carousel a reflection of your life today: once vibrant and alive, but now just sitting around uninvolved?

A church or community doesn’t need another idle carnival ride, much less someone uninvolved.

Waiting until you are “fixed” isn’t happening, so get up, get plugged back in, and see if there’s a little more “merry” left in your life.
