Seven Sentence Sermon: Did You Want to Be What You Are?

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up: a doctor, firefighter, teacher, football player, or homemaker?

After graduating from high school, I recall how I started to dress differently and even listen to classical music to become “successful”.

At the time, I didn’t know what success was, nor how to achieve it, but I watched others I thought were and tried to emulate them – at least from the outside.

The fifth chapter of Matthew provides us with The Beatitudes, where Jesus describes exactly what success is and how to achieve it and follow it with a challenge.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Although I was pretending to be something I didn’t know or understand, it was an important exercise at the time to prepare me for the life I would eventually be living.

If someone were looking at your life today and wanting to replicate your success, what would that look and would it clearly point them toward your Father?
