MUNCY, TX – Fifty years ago, George Foreman defeated Joe Frazier to become the heavyweight champion of the world; the Vietnam War ended; Roe vs. Wade overturned state bans on abortion; the World Trade Center opened in New York City; Gerald Ford became the only non-elected President of the United States; Miller Brewing introduced lite beer to the U.S., and; Johnny Gourdon started working for a rural electric cooperative.

At its annual meeting last Thursday at the Floyd County Friends Unity Center, Gourdon was recognized for fifty years of service to Lighthouse Electic Cooperative.
Equally as impressive is the 45 Years of Service award presented to Danny Nixon, who started with Lighthouse in 1978.
Originally chartered as the Floyd County Rural Electric Cooperative 87 years ago, Lighthouse now serves twelve counties and more than 4,300 miles of line – equivalent to two-thirds around the moon.

Others recognized at the meeting include Tracy Smith (25 years), Sherrie Green (15 years), Manuel Martinez (15 years), Brenda Yeary (10 years), Carlos Rendon (10 years), Cam Washington (10 years), Rusty Hopper (5 years), Cliff Messman (5 years), and Aaron Saenz (5 years).
