FLOYDADA, TX – For over 20 years, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has encouraged Floydada to upgrade its water infrastructure. This week, that request is being met.

The city maintains water wells west of town that pump fresh water to holding tanks on the south side of the community and, from there, pump the drinking water to one of the two water towers within the city limits.

However, those holding tanks have been difficult to maintain, partly due to one being 70 years old and the other 60 years. So earlier this year, City Manager Darrell Gooch secured $1.3 million in grants to replace the tanks leaving just $200,000 to be paid by the city.

According to Gooch, every water meter will be assessed a $5 monthly fee until the remaining balance is paid off.

The construction on U.S. 62 follows the rebuilding of the pump house, which provides the pressure needed to move the water back into town. As part of the upgrades, he says a generator will be added to maintain water pressure for customers even when the electricity is out.

The total cost for the upgrades is $1.5 million and is expected to extend the life of the city’s water infrastructure for many years.
