FLOYDADA, TX – Anyone who knows anything about Floyd County, Texas, knows of the long-standing athletic rivalry between the two schools here: Lockney and Floydada.

However, for all the talk, there are many instances whereby someone from one school will end up in the other community and vice versa.

Thankfully for the past 34 years, students at A.B. Duncan Elementary have been able to learn from Maria Peralez.

She was raised in Lockney, graduated from Texas Tech in 1990, and taught for a few years in Lubbock ISD.

Her calling has been Pre-K, and her longevity is proof of the work she has done. In addition, Peralez has served on leadership committees, professional learning committees, HeadStart parent/teacher groups, and building committees during a campus building remodel and has mentored student teachers.

As she prepares to retire at the end of this school year, where will she invest her time and energy?

“It was difficult to make the decision to retire as teaching has been very much a part of my identity for quite some time,” Peralez says. “My plans are to substitute some so that I can continue to teach and share/practice my skill (and) I also plan to travel, volunteer, explore new hobbies such as photography and have more time for family (grandchildren).”

Congratulations to Maria Peralez!
