CANYON, TX – Eighteen Floyd County students will compete in the Class 2A Region I UIL Academic Meet today (Friday).

The event, on the campus of West Texas A&M University, features 30 contests at the high school level, with the top students from all four regions across Texas earning a berth at the State UIL Competition in May.

Lockney’s Bryson Klein claimed gold in Austin last year in Biology and finished sixth in Science. He will attempt to return in Science (individual and team) and Literary Criticism.

According to the UIL, the Academic Competition is “designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively, exhibiting much more than knowledge and comprehension.”
