WASHINGTON, DC – Early Saturday morning, lawmakers finally elected a new Speaker of the House of Representatives, paving the way for the 118th Congress to begin their work officially.
Though it took 15 rounds of balloting, California Representative Kevin McCarthy (Bakersfield) received enough votes to become the next Speaker, which now opens the door for the House to formally elect chairs for committees – including the House Agriculture Committee.
Rep. G.T. Thompson (PA-15) will be the new Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, with Rep. David Scott (GA-13) moving back to the ranking-member seat.
Thompson became the first Chairman from Pennslyvania since John Dawson in 1853, though the first-ever chair of the committee was Thomas Forrest in 1820.
At the top of the agenda for the committee, this year is the writing of the 2023 Farm Bill to replace the 2018 bill that expires at the end of September.
