FLOYDADA – Thankfully, it will only be a simulation.
On Thursday, Floydada Collegiate High School students will see firsthand the aftermath of a drunk driving crash. The crash will involve their friends, and two of them will not survive.
Again, thankfully it’s only a simulation.
The students are taking part in a program known as “Shattered Dreams” and those who have experienced it before say it can feel as emotionally real as an actual accident. The simulated crash will be set up on a Floydada street Thursday morning, and will involve Floydada EMS, firefighters, police and sheriff’s deputies as well as the Moore-Rose Funeral Home. Six students will be in two cars that have crashed, and with makeup and a little bit of acting, they will show their classmates first hand the dangers of drinking and driving.
It doesn’t end with the crash, however.
During the day a number of students will be pulled from class by a Grim Reaper, who will then take them out of school and away for the night. During that time the students will be cut off from communicating with family and friends. That evening they will hear from families who lost children and survivors of drunk driving accidents in an effort to show the very real impact drunk driving will have.
But, Friday morning following breakfast the students will get to go back to school, where they will give a presentation on their experience and what they have learned.
If only all drunk drivers could do the same. But unfortunately, not every time is a simulation.
