FLOYDADA – “It’s a closer game than what’s on the scoreboard.”
That was the agreement of Floydada play-by-play caller Randell Sims and his Lockney counterpart Tucker Lowrance Friday night as the Floydada Whirlwinds topped the Lockney Longhorns 46-6 in the 100th matchup of the Floyd County Championship.
The game featured turnovers on both sides of the ball, but Floydada was able to convert more of their possessions into touchdowns, taking a 27-0 lead into the half. The Longhorns were able to score the first points of their season early in the 4th quarter, but that would be it as the Whirlwinds took home the trophy traded back and forth between the two teams.
A Longhorns player was injured at the very end of the game, but Superintendent Jim Baum reported the player was alert and was being taken to Mangold Memorial Hospital as a precaution.
Following the game, Whirlwinds Head Coach J.R. Compton told his players they would still be working out on Monday, despite the school holiday. “Champions can’t take a day off,” he told his players, telling them they now have to turn their attention to the Smyer Bobcats and their homecoming game next Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Charles Tyer Stadium.
The Longhorns will next travel to Plains to take on the Cowboys before returning home on September 16 to play the Texas Leadership Charter Academy of Abilene.
