FLOYDADA – “Thank You!”
A.B. Duncan Elementary Principal Monica Smith was grateful for the Floydada Collegiate ISD board Tuesday night after they approved a plan to improve security at her school.
The initial plan offered by Superintendent Gilbert Trevino was for the district to spend $88,000 on a key card system to access all exterior doors at the elementary. The need to change how the doors lock was made necessary by both age (the current electronic system is roughly 15 years old) and necessity following new state mandates in the wake of the Uvalde tragedy last May.
When asked how much it would cost to convert all doors at the school, Trevino reported a price tag of $115,000. “If we’re going to do it, let’s do it all,” said board member Eric Smith, whose comments were met with overwhelming agreement from fellow board members and Trevino.
The system will be installed by Digital Air Control, the company responsible for a similar system now in place at the secondary campus, meaning the entire district would have the same security measures.
School safety was one major topic of Tuesday’s meeting, with the other the vote to finalize the 2023 budget and set the tax rate for the upcoming year. Under the approved plan the district will operate a nearly $12 million budget on a tax rate of $1.5196 per $100 property valuation.
The board also heard from Principals Smith and Ware on recent STAAR scores given to the district, including positives and areas already designated for growth.
Trevino also gave board members current enrollment data, showing 685 students in Pre-K through 12th grade.
The next FCISD board meeting will be on September 13 at 7:00 p.m.
