FRIONA, TX – A former Floydada coach died Thursday morning from injuries in a car wreck approximately eight miles east of Friona.

34-year-old Eric Fierro, Jr., of Bovina, was westbound on U.S. 60 when his 2016 Jeep Cherokee collided with a westbound tractor-trailer driven by 60-year-old Sergio Acosta-Rocha of Perryton at 12:40 am.

The Amarillo Globe-News reports that Fiero was traveling behind the 18-wheeler when the semi slowed down to enter the turning lane; the Jeep then collided with the semi’s trailer.

Both men wore seatbelts, and while Acosta-Rocha was not injured, Fierro was pronounced dead at the scene. Funeral arrangements are pending with Hansard Family Funeral Home in Friona.

Fierro coached at Floydada High School in the 10s and was currently a coach at Bovina High School.
