Steve Pritchett (Amarillo)

Steve Pritchett of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. The memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada, with visitation before the service, 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Steve was born March 4, 1956, in Floydada, Texas, to Early and Nell Pritchett. He was a member of South Plains Baptist Church and attended South Plains Elementary School through the eighth grade, then graduated from Floydada High School in 1975. Subsequently, he attended West Texas A&M University, graduating in 1979 with a B.S. degree in mass communication and business administration. He later completed numerous graduate courses in economic development, including studies at Texas A&M and the University of Oklahoma.

After working as a disc jockey at the West Texas A&M radio station during his college days, his early career was with KVII-TV in Amarillo. Beginning as a reporter, producer, and anchor, Steve eventually became news director over the station, ranking #1 in local news audience ratings during the six years he held that position. In 1994 he joined the Amarillo Economic Development Council, where he retired as Vice-President after 13 years.

In the mid-80s, Pritchett served as Channel 7’s Man in Motion. Ironically, he also worked at KVII simultaneously as the late Terry Amburn (sports anchor), originally from Floydada.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, sister Louise and her husband Shorty Turner, and brother Jim Pritchett. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife Connie Elaine (Welch) Pritchett, his brother Price Pritchett and wife Patty of Dallas, plus many great nieces and nephews he loved being with.

Steve’s quick sense of humor stuck with him throughout his life. His favorite pastimes were reading, fly fishing, traveling, and hanging out with Connie at their place in Santa Fe or being with Sadie, his beloved golden retriever.
