SUNDOWN – The Floydada Lady Winds (21-2-1, 7-0) got shutdown pitching from Erin Trevino and an abundance of extra base hits including a two run homer by Marissa Obregon in beating the Sundown Roughettes 18-0 on the road in 3-2A action.

Trevino was in top form the entire contest starting out by striking out the side in the first inning. “That start gave me confidence and my pitches continue to work for me,” explained Trevino. She joked about being challenged to strike out between seven and ten batters, and responded with one better.

Trevino threw a season high 11-strikeouts to raise her season total to 144-K’s in a one-hit shutout, her 10th time to pull off a shutout this season. With this performance, Trevino’s ERA dropped to a season low 2.84. Her pitching has sometimes been dominating during the Floydada’s current 10-game winning streak.

“Erin has learned a new pitch of a drop-curve that can drop to the bottom of the strike zone and break away from the batter. When it works it can be nasty. I know of three times she struck out a batter today with the drop-curve. Her screwball and fastball were also effective in this 30-plus MPH wind today,” explained Floydada assistant coach Bethany Morales, the team’s pitching coach.

The Lady Winds defense made some spectacular plays to back up Trevino, including a pick-off of a Roughette runner by Obregon’s throw to first baseman Analise Perez; Kailee Sanchez made a beautiful back handed catch at second base to rob a Sundown pitch of a probable extra base hit and game within inches of turning in a double play shortstop Clari Delafuente relay throw to first base; and Delafuente had a couple of charging catches at shortstop for plays that top-notch infielders can perform.

Then there were Floydada’s bats that not only had a home run by Obregon but four triples by Delafuente, Carissa Fernandez, Dani Zavala and Celese Wickware; as well as four doubles from Delafuente, Obregon, Zavala and Sanchez. Between that quartet, they drove in a combined nine runs. Both Obregon and Fernandez ended up with three hits apiece, and Celese Wickware scored a game high three runs.

Floydada and Sundown will resume their two-game weekly series on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Lady Winds Field. KFLP 900AM and 98.5 FM will have the broadcast.
