PLAINVIEW – In an evening honoring its donors and strongest supporters, Wayland Baptist University uniquely recognized the work of Floydada’s First Baptist Church for their century-long support of the college.
The church was recognized as one of six “Keepers of the Flame” for lifetime donations of $100,000 or more to the school’s ongoing mission. Others recognized with the award Saturday night included the City of Plainview and the United Supermarkets grocery chain.
Wayland Baptist University President Bobby Hall praised the church and the Floydada community for their years of dedication to the cause of Christian education in the region. “This small community has big hearts,” Hall said in his presentation, adding that a number of members of the Wayland family have served as ministers at First Baptist Church both as students and as alumni.
He also recognized how many Pioneers have both come from the church or have moved there after graduating from Wayland, something First Baptist’s Nathan Adams echoed in his acceptance of the award. “I’m privileged to be able to send and recommend students to Wayland.”
The Keeper of the Flame award was presented as part of Wayland’s Pioneers of Excellence banquet Saturday evening at the university’s Plainview campus.
