LOCKNEY – While it wasn’t the main topic of conversation at Thursday’s Lockney ISD board meeting, the discussion of where the district will find its next Athletic Director did come up in the wake of Cory McCombs’ departure.

McCombs announced on March 25 he would be departing the district for a similar position in Anson, near his hometown. On Thursday LISD Superintendent Jim Baum recommended to his board that the district use a committee to hire McCombs’ replacement, similar to how he was hired last year, and that it should be in place in the next week.
And while coaches interested in the position have already started contacting the district, Baum says they are not on a deadline – instead focusing on getting a good leader. “We don’t have a specific timeline,” Baum told the Record Friday. “We’re going to interview until we have the best person for the position.”
The board did make moves on other resignations of positions that have been announced, as well as three new hires – including new secondary math teacher Dwayne Jones and Natalie Snowden & Mark Carroll of the Floyd County Extension Office as adjunct faculty members through August of 2023.
During Thursday’s meeting the board delegated hiring authority to Baum in allowing the superintendent the power to fill vacant teacher positions without having to seek board approval before the next scheduled meeting. All administrative positions will continue to need final approval by the board.
