NEW DEAL – Floydada and Lockney athletes had very good performances at the District 4-2A track and field championships on Wednesday and Thursday at Noland Stadium to advance to the Area meet in Floydada in two weeks. The Lady Winds advanced seven indidual and three relay teams; the Lady Horns had nine individual and all three relays to move on to Area; the Whirlwinds advance all three relays and seven individual events; while the Longhorns had a duo of individual qualifiers.
Floydada junior Jayson Cooper made a significant showing at district by qualifying in five events – second in the triple jump, 400 relay and 800 relay; third in the long jump and fourth in the 100 dash.
Floydada girls 800 relay won the district title with a time of 1:53.20. The winning quartet included Lailah Burks, Clari Dela Fuente, Faith Lopez and Allyson Romero. Lopez won first in the 200-meters dash and ran a leg on Floydada’s second place 1600 relay.
Lady Winds Kirsten Pyle and Faith Lopez each won a gold medal individually and advanced in a total of three events each. Pyle took first in the pole vault at 8’0”, second in the 100-hurdles and third place in the 300-hurdles. Lopez won the 200-meters in 28.46, got a gold medal by running a leg on the 800-relay and a silver with the 1600 relay. Whirlwind Izaiah Alvarado qualified in three events by taking silver medals in the 400 dash and ran legs on the second place 400 and 1600 relays. Saul Reyes and Andres Mendoze both ran legs in all three of the Floydada boys 400, 800 and 1600 relays that won silver medals.
Adaliyah Jones of Lockney won the 100-dash in a time of 13.11 and ran a leg on the Lady Horns 400 relay that gets to move on. Other athletes that were multiple qualifiers for Area – Lockney long distance runner Madisson Johnson in the 1600 and 3200; Lockney thrower Haven Walker won district with a heave of 105′ 8” in the discus and second in the shot put; Floydada’s Lailah Burks took third in the 400 dash and won gold with the 800 relay; Whirlwind Jonathan Pena got third in the 200 and ran a leg on the second place 1600 relay.
The top four finishers in each varsity event will advance from the 4-2A meet to take on the qualifiers from 3-2A in the Area meet at Charles Tyer Stadium in Floydada on April 15. 3-2A includes Panhandle, Olton, Farwell, Vega, Bovina and Boys Ranch.
Floydada’s Junior Varsity girls won the team championship in 4-2A with 113-points.
