FLOYDADA – With 30 to 60 mph winds out of the west, it was amazing that the junior high track athletes did not run side-ways instead of north and south at Charles Tyer Stadium on Tuesday. Despite the miserable conditions there were still some outstanding performances such as a pair of Lockney 8th grade boys Daniel Alvarado and Johnny Gonzales that earned five medals each.

Alvarado struck gold four times by winning the 400, high jump, long jump and triple jump and got a bronze by running a leg of Lockney’s 1600 relay. Gonzales got a pair of silver medals by finishing as the runnerup to Alvarado in the long jump and triple jump, then three bronze by running legs on the Longhorns three relays (400, 800 and 1600).

Two Floydada girls – 8th grader Kyra Segura and 7th grader Madison Pyle each won four medals. Pyle took a par of gold medals in the 300 hurdles and pole vault, a silver on the Lady Winds 400 relay and a bronze in the 100 hurdles. Segura took bronze in the 100 and pole vault, plus a pair of silver by running a leg on Floydada 400 and 800 relays.

There were eight athletes that earned three medals apiece – Floydada 8th grade boys Brandon Carmona (first in the 110 hurdles and 1600 relay, second on the 400 relay) and Ivan Baltierra (gold on the 1600 relay, silver on the 400 relay, and bronze in 300 hurdles); Floydada 7th grade boys – James Zepeda (first in the 800 and 1600 runs and 1600 relay), Cooper Hinsley (two gold in the 300 hurdles and 1600 relay, plus silver on the 400 relay), Avrian Garica (pair of silver on the 400 and 800 relays, bronze in the 200), and Robert Delo-Santo (silver on both the 400 relay and 800 relay, bron ze on the 1600 relay); Floydada 8th grade girl Ana Saldana (gold in the 800, silver on both 400 and 800 relays); and Lockney 7th grade girl Victoria Luna (silver in the high jump, and bronze in the triple jump and 400 relay).

Floydada 7th grader Martin Ramirez earned two medals (gold on the 1600 relay, and bronze in the 400 dash). Floydada 8th grader Adalle Ramos won first place in the 800 run.
