FLOYDADA – It took the most faithful fans to sit through the 30 to 60 mph winds on Tuesday at Watson Field to watch the Lockney Longhorns (8-5, 1-2) grind out an 8-2 win over the Floydada Whirlwinds (4-9, 1-4).
Lockney got the victory by scoring three runs in each the third and fourth innings, plus added a pair of insurance scores in the sixth frame. Lockney got seven hits in the game with a two RBI triple by Nathan Cineceros, Martin Salas had three RBI with a double and single, and Austin Rodriguez had three hits including a double and three RBI.
Floydada had more hits with 12 in a losing effort. Saul Reyes was 3-4; while Donovan Rocha, Javier Santos and Matthew Luna all went 2-4 at the plate. Rocha had a triple for the Whirlwinds only extra base hit. Floydada had a 1-0 lead after the first inning, and trailed 3-2 after the third frame.
Dyllan Thiebaud got the pitching win by allowing 2-runs on six hits in 3.2-innings of work. He had three strikeouts and allowed a pair of walks. Austin Rodriguez got the save with 3.1-innings of shutout pitching by throwing 4-K’s and giving up three hits.
Game 2 of this 3-2A series will be Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Longhorn Field. 106.1 FLiP FM will have the radio broadcast.
