FLOYDADA – It has been more than a decade since Floydada has had a high school boy’s golf team. Floydada has had some good golfers for years in this community and it carried down to the to high school age. Floydada had numerous golf teams that competed for district championships and individual medalists from the 1960’s through the 1990’s.
So far four players have signed up for golf and are practicing at Floydada Country Club. This group includes senior Trace Glasscock, junior Brett Brittain, sophomore Reese Hinsley and freshman Brae Ballesteros. All four of these players are versatile athletes and will hopefully be able to field a competitive team.
The team is coached by Adam Zepeda, who tells the Record he is excited to be a part of re-establishing high school golf in Floydada. He adds gaining experience and improving will be their main objective.
The team’s first competition will be on March 28 at the New Home Invitational at Meadowbrook Country Club in Lubbock. UIL district competition will take place on April 4, also at Meadowbrook.
Floydada Country Club (FCC) is one of the favorite golf courses in this part of the state with its layout in the beautiful Blanco Canyon. Golfers from all over the South Plains like to play this 9-hole course when possible because of its uniqueness. FCC is highly spoken of by golf enthusiasts. It will be exciting for the local golfers to see a Whirlwinds golf team again and a scorecard posted on the FCC Pro Shop window during a tournament. There is something special about a country club having a high school team that declares it their home course.
