LUBBOCK – Luke Holcombe of West Texas A&M knew going into the Lone Star Conference (LSC)
Track and Field Indoor Championships at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center he had a big obstacle to get around in Danree Delancy of TAMU-Kingsville in the shot put event. Delancy and Holcombe were No. 1 and 2 in the standings going into the LSC Championships on Saturday (Feb. 26), and that’s the way they finished.
Delancy won the gold medal with an impressive throw of 56′ 10.75” (17.34-meters), followed by Holcombe with a quality heave of 52′ 9.5” (16.09-meters). There was no ‘last throw’ heroics on this date for Holccombe with the gap Delancy had created. Holcombe is a freshman from Floydada where he won a 2A State Championship in the shot put at the Texas UIL Track Championships in 2021. Delancy is a junior from Bethel Town, Jamaica. Jamaica is known world wide for producing top class track and field athletes that compete in the Olympics and with universities across the United States.

Holcombe has had a special month of February for the West Texas Buffaloes by winning first place the previous two weekends at invitational meets of small college competitors at the Tech Sports Performance Center.
Holcombe also competed in the weight throw event and finished in 9th place of the LSC meet. The weight throw is a 35-pound ball attached to a small chain and handle. The shot put in college weight 16-pounds compared to the 12-pound shot used in high school.
