SLATON – As the Slaton Sadler Monument Tournament progressed from Thursday to Saturday, the weather improved each day and the Floydada Lady Winds (5-0) responded with victories.
Floydada closed out its run in the Slaton Tourney by knocking off the host Slaton Tigerettes 10-3 on Saturday afternoon.
For the tourney, the Lady Winds put up some impressive numbers by outscoring their opponents 52-25; got more base hits 65-45; and received more walks 21-18.
Individually in the five games, senior Erin Trevino slapped seven doubles and produced six RBI; sophomore Carissa Fernandez hit a homerun, a triple and five tdoubles plus had seven RBI; senior Marissa Obregon knocked a grand slam homerun, four doubles and pushed across six RBI; senior Clarissa Delafuente hustled out three doubles and made three RBI; senior Kaley Garza had a pair of doubles and two RBI. Other extra bases hits were made by senior Kailee Sanchez and freshman Soriah Wickware with one double each.
“I saw some good things in our offense. We tried our small ball (bunting) several occassions and did well. Small ball will be important in our attack this season. The team’s hitting kept improving (25 hits for extra bases). We had a couple of freshmen step up and give us some hope in our new players,” Coach Armando Morales explained.
In the circle, Trevino shook off some dust and rust by picking up 5-wins, threw 25-strikeouts, surrendered only 7-walks, was tagged with 32-hits and 13-runs.
“Erin Trevino is important to us. Her pitching is getting back into form even though she just had two days of practice before the tournament after coming out of basketball. Erin will be fine,” Morales talking about his All-State pitcher.
