FLOYDADA – It’s dry, and multiple forecasts say it will continue to get drier as 2022 progresses; in a proactive move Monday Floyd County Commissioners approved a resolution for the county to put a burn ban into effect.
The 90-day ban was approved unanimously during Monday morning’s commissioners court hearing. “We are right there on the verge with no relief in sight,” Judge Marty Lucke told the court. “We’re right at the point we need to do something.” He added that the ban could be pulled any time if conditions improve.
The ban was put into place just as the National Weather Service’s Lubbock office issued a Fire Weather Watch for the region, discouraging outdoor burning due to high winds and low humidity.

Monday’s order still allows for outdoor grilling or small fires in barrels as long as a mesh cover to control debris and a fire extinguisher or water are available. The order does not apply to firefighter training or prescribed burns.
Once enacted at noon Monday, the ban will remain in effect until May 15 at 11:59 p.m.
