FLOYDADA – The Floydada Volunteer Fire Department started their year with a house fire and ended the first month of 2022 with a total of eight runs on everything from that fire to a dumpster fire.

The first event, and the first chance for the department to use their new ladder truck came on January 2 when a fire broke out in a home being remodeled in the 600 block of South Main.

The department had a number of runs involving cotton, including a cotton burr fire along US 70 on January 4, a fire at the seed house at McCoy Gin on January 11 and another burr fire at the Floydada Co-Op on January 15.

Grass fires made up two runs during a seasonably dry month, one west of the McCoy community on January 9 and multiple grass fires between the city and the canyon along US 62 on January 15.

The dumpster fire was found behind homes in the 200 block of West California on January 15 as well, the department’s second run of that day.

The other call for the month came as a CO2 call at a home along FM 207 in the county on January 6.

Floydada VFD also released incident report numbers for 2021, with November by far the busiest with 12 runs. The least came in June when the department only had to respond to one call. There were a total of 56 incidents between January 1 and December 31, 2021, with the overwhelming majority (50) of those calls being calls for fire and one severe weather/natural disaster call.
